Oxygen Therapy May Help Treat Autism Symptoms
new study suggests children with autism may benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy. But not everyone agrees it's time to recommend the costly potential treatment.
The study, published in BMC Pediatrics, was a small one, involving just 62 children with autism and lasting just four weeks. It found that the children who regularly used hyperbaric therapy saw improvements in their language and social interaction abilities.
Hyperbaric therapy involves inhaling oxygen at a pressure greater than 1 atmosphere (atm) in a pressurized chamber.
In this study, the children, aged between two and seven years old, were randomly assigned to either 40 hours of treatment in a hyperbaric chamber at 1.3 atm and 24 per cent oxygen (treatment group) or slightly pressurized room air at 1.03 atm and 21 per cent oxygen (non-treatment group).
Their outcomes were evaluated by three scales: the Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scale, the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC), and the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC).
The study found that children with autism in the treatment group had significant improvements in overall functioning, receptive language, social interaction, eye contact, and sensory/cognitive awareness compared to children in the non-treatment group.
In all, 30 per cent in the treatment group were rated by doctors as "very much improved" or "much improved" compared with eight per cent of those in the control group. Eighty per cent in the treatment group improved compared with 38 per cent of controls.
The study, led by Dr. Dan Rossignol from the International Child Development Resource Centre in Florida, was not able to measure whether the results were long-lasting or permanent.
While the evidence is still preliminary, some parents in Canada are already turning to this therapy.
Five days a week, Lara Linhares and her eight-year-old son Quin climb into a hyperbaric chamber together at a clinic called Under Pressure in Port Credit Ont. for an hour.
Linhares says the oxygen therapy appears to be working, making her son more approachable.
"After our first session, he came up and hugged me, unprompted. Speaking as a mom of a child with autism, you can't put a price on that," she says.
"He has been using more language, putting more words together, forming longer sentences since we started."
The hyperbaric chamber allows patients to breathe in much higher levels of pure oxygen, in the hope that it will increase blood flow.
The therapy is typically used to heal wounds, but some clinics say it is beneficial for children with fetal alcohol syndrome and cerebral palsy. Now, some are also promoting its use for autism.
"It's simple, it's effective and it's safe," says certified hyperbaric technologist William Eddy. "We're getting oxygen deeper into the brain."
Margaret Spoelstra, the executive director of Autism Ontario, notes that this is just the first randomized controlled study on the therapy's use in autism and the results need to be replicated in larger studies.
"It seems encouraging to parents, but I worry about parents' response to this. This is still a small sample. More children need to be studied to draw conclusions," she says.
She points out that the children in the study's placebo group also showed improvements. And the effects of hyperbaric therapy need to be evaluated over the medium and long term, she says.
While there are more studies under way, Spoelstra worries parents will sign up for treatments that cost $300 an hour without convincing proof.
"I'm worried that parents might rush to say, 'This is something we need for our children'," she says.
"This therapy costs a lot of money for which the evidence doesn't exist enough to warrant it being a recommended treatment."
Linhares says she's not going to wait years for further

Use of Sign Language & Children With Autism by Dr. Carbone
Many parents of children with autism fear that using sign language will impede the development of speech in their child.
The research and expert opinion universally support that sign language will not reduce the likelihood of developing speech. Sign language serves as an alternative form of communication while developing speech as a primary form of communication. It helps reduce problem behavior and increases vocal production in some children with autism. Sign language preserves most of the characteristics of speaking and therefore may be superior to picture symbol systems for many children.
Sign language along with additional techniques can facilitate vocal production, as demonstrated in a research paper published by the Carbone Clinic and detailed in the following
Therefore, in many cases we recommend the use of sign language over picture symbol systems and speech generating devices for the treatment of children with autism who are non-vocal.
The Carbone Clinic in Dubai treats children with autism. Our treatment follows the methodology developed by Dr. Vincent Carbone in his New York clinic based upon B.F. Skinner's Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Treatment is supervised by certified senior staff to provide superior ABA services.

Autism Symptoms and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Symptoms and Treatments
Autism treatment options have been somewhat limited. These options generally have included the use of one or more strategies geared toward improving the functionality of a patient with autism. Strategies such as behavior management and community support groups are relatively common as a means to combat the symptoms of autism. Speech and occupational therapies have also been used to improve the quality of life for an autistic patient. But with such a wide range of variables, these treatments may not have lasting effects.
The symptoms of autism are quite varied and range from very slight to severe on an individual case by case basis. However, some of the most common symptoms include difficulty with communication, the inability to form meaningful social relationships, and a general lack of interest in active play. These symptoms are usually seen at a very early age, as a child begins to experiment with language and a variety of social settings. Autism has also been linked to an increase in anxiety and depression. All of these symptoms can occur at varying levels due to the wide spectrum of this disorder. As a result, each case requires individualized treatment options.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment for Autism
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for autism provides a safe way to allow more oxygen to enter the body. This process benefits an autistic patient by enabling the body to circulate oxygen more effectively and efficiently. It promotes blood flow to the brain and reduces inflammation of tissue. Hyperbaric therapy has also been shown to improve immune system function. It increases the production of new cells and improves neurotransmitter abnormalities. Hyperbaric therapy for autism is extremely low risk and includes a multitude of benefits. These benefits can include improvement in:
Language skills
Cognitive function
Social skills
Abstract conceptualization
Overall health
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been used for decades as an alternative treatment option for a diverse collection of infections, ailments, and conditions. It has been used to effectively treat both children and adults with an amazingly high success rate. Several studies have shown that hyperbaric treatment for autism significantly improves cognitive awareness, social interaction, and language reception. All of these therapeutic benefits have been achieved with very little to no side effects on patients of all ages.
While showing good results throughout the United States and the rest of the world, hyperbaric oxygen treatment is still in the research stage and not yet an approved treatment by the FDA.

Autism in twin baby
We have been watching old family videos over the holidays. I found this one really interesting, as looking back on it almost twelve years later, I can definitely see signs of autism in Bailey even though the twins are only around ten weeks old.
His twin sister Natalya is clearly trying to communicate with him, making eye contact, reaching out to him and making happy verbalisations. Bailey makes no eye contact and looks past her, never reciprocating her attempts at communication. As you can see in the video he is always moving his head side to side and appears uncomfortable. He was always seeking movement, and we noticed a huge positive change in him once he was more mobile and started to crawl.
I have Bailey's permission to upload this video. We are hoping that the footage may assist others in looking for early signs of autism, whether it's parents or professionals, so that these children can receive an earlier diagnosis and start the early intervention process.

Book | One of Us: A Family's Life with Autism
Get your free
In 1991, Mark Osteen and his wife, Leslie, were struggling to understand why their son, Cameron, was so different from other kids. At age one, Cam had little interest in toys and was surprisingly fixated on books. He didnt make baby sounds; he ignored other children. As he grew older, he failed to grasp language, remaining unresponsive even when his parents called his name. When Cam started having screaming anxiety attacks, Mark and Leslie began to grasp that Cam was developmentally delayed. But when Leslie raised the possibility of an autism diagnosis, Mark balked. Autism is so rare, he thought. Might as well worry about being struck by lightning.since that time, awareness of autism has grown monumentally. Autism has received extensive coverage in the news media, and it has become a popular subject for film, television, and literature, but the disorder is frequently portrayed and perceived as a set of eccentricities that can be corrected with proper treatment. In reality, autism permanently wrecks many childrens chances for typical lives. Plenty of recent bestsellers have described the hardships of autism, but those memoirs usually focus on the recovery of people who overcome some or all of the challenges of the disorder. And while that plot is uplifting, its rare in real life, as few autistic children fully recover. The territory of severe autismof the child who is debilitated by the condition, who will never be curedhas been largely neglected. One of Us: A Familys Life with Autism tells that story.in this book, Mark Osteen chronicles the experience of raising Cam, whose autism causes him aggression, insomnia, compulsions, and physical sickness. In a powerful, deeply personal narrative, Osteen recounts the struggles he and his wife endured in diagnosing, treating, and understanding Cams disability, following the family through the years of medical difficulties and emotional wrangling. One of Us thrusts the reader into the life of a child who exists in his own world and describes the immense hardships faced by those who love and care for him. Leslie and Mark's marriage is sorely tested by their son's condition, and the book follows their progress from denial to acceptance while they fight to save their own relationship.by embracing the little victories of their life with Cam and by learning to love him as he is, Mark takes the reader down a road just as gratifying, and perhaps more moving, than one to recovery

AUTISM: First Sign at 6 months old
This is Rafael at 6 months old. The first sign of autism for him is hand flapping. Please know that this is NOT an issue if there aren't MORE symptoms of autism, but there were. The second sign of autism for him was echolalia and that is the repeating of speech and sound. He was diagnosed at two with high functioning autism and OCD. I want to show other parents early signs of autism so they can be aware of it and can watch their childs development. No one symptom shows autism, it is always a GROUP of symptoms. I have two children on the autism spectrum and while a lot of their symptoms are similar, some are not. All kids are different, even the same disability in a child will be different in every child. You have to look for the early signs and begin working with them very young so they can have the best outcome. My older son with Aspergers is very independent and well-spoken. He had eight years of speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. He speaks very eloquently now and is highly intelligent. Most kids with high functioning autism have a high IQ, this is just a disorder of communication and processing! If you feel your child is on the asd autism spectrum, please have them evaluated. It hurts nothing to check, and they won't be diagnosed unless they have symptoms. THIS is NOT labeling your child, this is getting them extra help that they need to function in every day life! Good luck!

High demand for treatment at children's centre
(26 Dec 2016) LEAD IN:
An educational centre for children with autism in the eastern Libyan city of Bayda has been attracting children from all over the country.
Opened just four years ago, the centre now has plans to more than double in size due to high demand for its specialist care.
STORY-LINE
The happy squeals of young children fill this playground in the eastern Libyan city of Bayda.
This playground is part of a centre of which every aspect has been specially designed and built for youngsters with autism.
Trainer such as Ahlam Faraj work with the children, providing dedicated care.
Reported cases of children on the autism spectrum have been rising.
Specialist care can be very hard to come by in Libya, which has been riven by conflict and political instability since 2011.
"The autism disorder is one of many disorders that have spread in recent times," Faraj says.
"The nature of our work and its concept are centred on adjusting behaviour."
The children are placed into small groups.
"To each specialist (trainer) we assign four or five children, with the help of one assistant in the class. And the way we work is to adjust the behaviour using games, so our work is, in an indirect way, using toys."
There is a scarcity of centres like this, and this place has proved very popular since it opened in 2012.
Around 120 children from all over Libya are currently being treated here.
Faraj says demand is very high and there is a need for more trainers.
"The reason we are not receiving all the children every day is because the lack of specialist trainers and because the place is too small to handle them all in the same day," she explains. "God willing, we will move to the bigger main building in a new location, which is currently being furnished."
The head of Bayda Autism Centre, Fathy Adayekh, explains that the centre was established using charitable funding, largely via Libya's Social Security Fund.
The centre also raised money from local residents and continues to do so.
Adayekh says the centre has been set up to "international standards", with facilities including an indoor swimming pool, an occupational therapy hall, a games hall, a natural therapy hall, and a sandpool.
The complex also has passages and corridors specially designed to help children with autism break their routine, assisting in overcoming issues such as hyperactivity or excess lethargy.
The centre was borne out of the Bayda Autism Association.
The organisation's chairman Wanis Abdallah says parents of children with autism have been "suffering" because of a lack of (specialist) centres.
Bayda is aiming to provide help to many more children with autism.
Abdallah says the centre is seeking to raise two million US dollars to expand, with the aim of being able to treat up to 260 children.

Disabilities or Diffabilities: How Symptoms can be solutions in Autism Spectrum Disorders
Laurence Sugarman,MD, Professor for pediatrics and researcher on the field of psychophysiology, appeals to articulate and perceive people with disabilites as merely different instead of reducing them on their difficulties by dismissive verbalism. The term "dis-ability" is a mark which disregards the strengths of people with mental and physical difficulties. In an interview with Bernhard Trenkle he constitutes which impressive potentials define people who still suffer from the mark of disability.

Get your free
The difficulties experienced by children with autism and related conditions in inferring the thoughts, beliefs, desires and intentions of others are well documented in numerous studies. It now seems that these deficits underlie many of the social and communication problems that are characteristic of autism. Teaching Children with Autism to Mind-read explores the relationship of "theory of mind" deficits to other areas of children's functioning and describes existing experimental work that has attempted to enhance the skills associated with understanding others' minds. Drawing on their own intervention programme, and providing detailed information about the teaching materials and strategies they use, the authors provide practical guidelines for helping children with autism spectrum conditions to improve their understanding of beliefs, emotions and pretence. The authors tackle specific problematic issues including: * how to interpret facial expressions * how to recognise feelings of anger, sadness, fear and happiness * how feelings are affected by what happens and what is expected to happen * how to see things from another person's perspective * how to understand another person's knowledge and beliefs This easy-to-follow graded teaching guide is of particular relevance to special needs teachers, educational and clinical psychologists, speech and language therapists, and carers of children with autism spectrum conditions.

One of the largest and most complex human services systems in history has evolved to address the needs of people with autism and intellectual disabilities, yet important questions remain for many professionals, administrators, and parents. What approaches to early intervention, education, treatment, therapy, and remediation really help those with autism and other intellectual disabilities improve their functioning and adaptation? Alternatively, what approaches represent wastes of time, effort, and resources?controversial Therapies for Autism and Intellectual Disabilities, 2nd Edition brings together leading behavioral scientists and practitioners to shed much-needed light on the major controversies surrounding these questions. Expert authors review the origins, perpetuation, and resistance to scrutiny of questionable practices, and offer a clear rationale for appraising the quality of various services.the second edition of Controversial Therapies for Autism and Intellectual Disabilities has been fully revised and updated and includes entirely new chapters on psychology fads, why applied behavioral analysis is not a fad, rapid prompting, relationship therapies, the gluten-free, casein-free diet, evidence based practices, state government regulation of behavioral treatment, teaching ethics, and a parents primer for autism treatments.
Autism Symptoms and HBOT Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Similar to a handbook in its comprehensive description of the theory and research supporting current practices in the treatment of autism spectrum disorders, this interdisciplinary text shows how the existing knowledge base can be used to explore promising new possibilities related to the fields many unanswered questions. Key features include the following: Comprehensive This is the first book to consider the history and current state of autism as a field in transition, to cover its varied approaches and philosophies, and to describe the interventions used throughout the developmental cycle. Cross Disciplinary Serving students with autism necessitates communication and collaboration among professionals from several disciplines as well as family members. The editors have, therefore, brought together divergent perspectives, theories and philosophies in order to demonstrate that scientific evidence, rather than educational orientation, must determine which practices should be selected for use in particular situations. Research Based Whereas many existing texts advocate a particular type of treatment, this one recognizes that interventions must be selected and evaluated based on the scientific evidence of their effectiveness. Integrated Methodology chapter authors consider findings from studies that employed single-subject designs, experimental large-scale studies, and qualitative methodology. The inter-relatedness of therapies and disciplines will be highlighted throughout. Expertise The volume editors are all highly visible researchers in autism and developmental disabilities. Likewise, each chapter is directed by a senior, highly accomplished author who is nationally recognized for his/her work in the topic being addressed.this book is appropriate for practicing professionals in education and psychology and for speech/language therapists and other clinicians. It is also suitable as a graduate level text in these fields.

As Andrew Wakefield states in his prologue, if autism does not affect your family now, it will. If something does not changeand change soonthis is almost a mathematical certainty. This book affects you also. It is not a parochial look at a trivial medical spat in the United Kingdom, but dispatches from the battlefront in a major confrontationa struggle against compromise in medicine, corruption of science, and a real and present threat to children in the interests of policy and profit. It is a story of how the system deals with dissent among its doctors and scientists. In the pursuit of possible links between childhood vaccines, intestinal inflammation, and neurologic injury in children, Wakefield lost his job in Londons Royal Free Hospital, his country of birth, his career, and his medical license. A recent General Medical Council ruling stated that he was dishonest, irresponsible and showed callous disregard for the distress and pain of children. Maligned by the medical establishment and mainstream media, Wakefield endeavors to set the record straight in Callous Disregard. While explaining what really happened, he calls out the organizations and individuals that are acting not for the sake of children affected by autism, but in their own self-interests.

Autism spectrum disorders (asds) have been increasingly diagnosed in recent years and carries with it far reaching social and financial implications. With this in mind, educators, physicians, and parents are searching for the best practices and most effective treatments. But because the symptoms of Asds span multiple domains (e.g., communication and language, social, behavioral), successfully meeting the needs of a child with autism can be quite challenging. Evidence-based Practices and Treatments for Children with Autism offers an insightful and balanced perspective on topics ranging from the historical underpinnings of autism treatment to the use of psychopharmacology and the implementation of evidence-based practices (ebps). An evaluation methodology is also offered to reduce the risks and inconsistencies associated with the varying definitions of key autism terminology. This commitment to clearly addressing the complex issues associated with Asds continues throughout the volume and provides opportunities for further research. Additional issues addressed include: Behavioral excesses and deficits treatmentcommunication treatmentsocial awareness and social skills treatmentdietary, complementary, and alternative treatmentsimplementation of Ebps in school settingsinterventions for sensory dysfunctionwith its holistic and accessible approach, Evidence-based Practices and Treatments for Children with Autism is a vital resource for school psychologists and special education professionals as well as allied mental health professionals, including clinical child and developmental psychologists, psychiatrist, pediatricians, primary care and community providers.

Autism is in the public spotlight now more than ever as new research and information appears almost daily. Although in many ways this is a positive development it also presents challenges to families and practitioners who want to keep up with the latest developments and are left to sift through new information by themselves to see what is credible and relevant for them.each of us needs a personal research assistant who can determine which information we need to pay attention to and let us know how it might affect our daily work and the children we are living with or serve. Since we each dont have our own research assistants on staff, I am delighted to recommend this wonderful book by Fred Volkmar and Lisa Wiesner. Both of these talented professional leaders have combined their scientific skills and understanding of the field with great practical experience and ideas about how research can be translated into clinical practice. The result is a book that provides the best and most comprehensive information about recent scientific developments and a splendid practical guide for how they are being implemented and what we are learning in the process. The issues are presented in all of their complexity but translated into language that is clear, direct, and easy to follow. The format also lends itself to understanding the complex issues and their implications through excellent charts, question and answer sections, and chapters that vary from describing diagnostic issues to stating very specifically how to expand and evaluate the services one is receiving. The comprehensive references and lists of additional resources also add greatly to the overall package. As a professional dedicated to understanding scientific advances and helping families and teachers to utilize them most effectively, I am very pleased to have an ally like this book available. I am very grateful to the authors for providing a very credible, practical, and relevant addition to our field to help the many advocates and family practitioners to better understand the exciting new developments and how they can be implemented in our day to day work. Those taking the time to read through this superb volume will find it time well spent that pays back dividends in many different ways. foreword by Gary B. Despite years of study and advanced technologies, we still do not fully understand how thetypical brain works, much less how an autistic brain works. And while we havebecome increasingly familiar with the term autistic thinking, people with autism are stillmisunderstood, leading to frustration, depression and missed opportunities to reach onespotential.according to Peter Vermeulen, treatment of autism is still too focused on behavior and minimally focused on observationor determining the way of thinking that leads to the behavior.in this groundbreaking book, inspired by the ideas of Uta Frith, the internationally known psychologist and a pioneer in theory of mind as it relates to autism, Vermeulen explains in everyday terms how the autistic brain functions with a particular emphasis on the apparent lack of sensitivity to and awareness of the context in which things happen.full of examples, often humorous, the book goes on to examine context as it relates to observation, social interactions, communication and knowledge. The book concludes with a major section on how to reduce context blindness in these various areas, vitalfor successful functioning. Due to the far-reaching consequences of context blindness, this book, due out in the winter of 2011-2012, is a must for those living and working with somebody with autism.

About Abraham Hicks:
According to Esther and Jerry Hicks, Abraham is a group of entities
that are "interpreted" by Esther Hicks. Abraham have described themselves as "a group consciousness from the non-physical dimension." They have also said, "We are that which you are. You are the leading edge of that which we are. We are that which is at the heart of all religions." Abraham has said through Esther that whenever one feels moments of great love, exhilaration, or pure joy, that is the energy of Source, and that is who Abraham "is".
"Jerry and Esther never used the word channeling," Abraham clarifies. "It is used when applied to them, but they have never used it, because it means many things of which they are not, you see."

Book | Arctic Spring: Potential for Growth in Adults with Psychosis and Autism

The title of this book takes us on an imaginary voyage to a distant land where people live in extremely difficult and uncomfortable climatic and environmental conditions. In the same way, psychotic and autistic patients seem to experience an emotional inner world characterized by loneliness and coldness. This frozen world of emotions is also reflected in the transference and prevents the formation of the therapeutic alliance, which is indispensable for the therapy to develop. The author compares the characteristics of autistic child psychotherapies and those of the adult cases illustrated.
Book | Autism: Neural Basis and Treatment Possibilities

This book draws together contributions from some of the leading investigators in the field of autism to consider specific problem areas in current research. Each contributor brings expertise from a different field, providing a balanced view of the whole spectrum of study of this disorder. It covers four main areas: Twin and family studies indicate that the heritability of the underlying liability to autism exceeds 90% and point to a multifactorial causation, involving a relatively small number of susceptibility genes. The book discusses this issue in detail, along with the problem of why some additional symptoms are associated with autism while others are not. New techniques are available for examining the neurobiology of autism. The book contains results from imaging studies showing the contributions of different brain regions to autism. It includes neuropathological data and examines the neuropharmacology of autism. There is considerable discussion concerning the fundamental psychological deficit in children with autism. There is good evidence that "theory of Mind" deficits are associated with autism and this issue is discussed in the book, as are other competing possibilities. The most important practical question facing medical and psychological practitioners is how to help children with autism. The evidence relating to possible psychological or psychiatric interventions for rehabilitation of children with autism is examined in detail. Drug treatments have generally been disappointing in this field and there is one chapter devoted specifically to this problem. The book focusses ultimately on intervention studies and so is of practical relevance to people interested in helping autistic children. In addition, it provides a very convenient summary of the principal controversies which currently exist in research on autism.

Book | Art Therapy with Children on the Autistic Spectrum: Beyond Words
Get your free
Recent research has shown that art therapy can be particularly effective for children with autism and related communication disorders. The extensive range of symptoms experienced by autistic people makes them extremely individual in presentation, so any treatment used must be tailored to a range of varying needs. Art Therapy with Children on the Autistic Spectrum presents a new model of practice, which primarily focuses on communication difficulties. The authors describe how negative behaviours and subsequent tension may be alleviated when the autistic child is involved in interactive art making with the therapist.the book is divided into three parts: the first part explores art making processes and art work, with an emphasis on how art can be specifically communicative. A history of autism is presented within the therapeutic context. The second part challenges existing methods of practice within art therapy and considers the most appropriate approaches to treating autistic children. The last part discusses research that lead to the formulation of this specific model methodology and assessment interventions are analysed, as well as the ongoing development of appropriate assessment instruments. Case studies of art therapy with individual autistic children demonstrate the use of the model and the outcomes. Throughout the book, it is emphasised how art therapy works as an integral part of overall management and treatment approaches to autism. It will be of particular interest to all those professionals working with autistic children and specialists in other communication disorders.
